Kaivalyadhama, founded by Swami Kuvalayananda in Lonavla in 1924, pioneered the scientific and medical study of yoga, pairing traditional practice with laboratory research on its physiological effects.

Viniyoga, developed by T. K. V. Desikachar (1938–2016) from his father Krishnamacharya's later teaching, adapts practice to the individual through breath-led sequencing (vinyāsa-krama) and therapeutic application. It emphasises yoga fitted to the person rather than the person fitted to yoga.
